The Essence of Faith

This post is an answer to the saying that "1 Corinthians 15:1-4 is the Gospel" while twisting the scripture. The aim is to show what believing in Jesus for salvation is about (according to the Bible).

1 Corinthians 15:1-5
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.

Believing the facts of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 is not having the faith that saves. If that were the case, one could have nothing to do with what Jesus has spoken over the time of his ministry on earth and that is recorded for us in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but we all very much do. The key is here: if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain (v. 2). Is that "word" just the facts listed in verses 3 and 4 of the above passage? Don't ignore the "first of all" in verse 3, which points to the basics of the Christian faith.

But believing for salvation implies "doing" all of what Jesus has sent his disciples to teach to others to do themselves in order to be on the way to eternal life, entering that narrow door and walking on that narrow/constricted path (cf. Matthew 7:13-14, Luke 13:23-24). These are some of Jesus' last words to his apostles:

Matthew 28:19-20
19 Therefore go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to obey all things that I commanded you. And look, I am with you every day, even to the end of the age.

Faith implies obedience to Jesus' commandments (not the keeping of the Law of Moses given to the Israelites — no need to get into the "not of works" argument). A believer becomes a disciple, a follower of his master Jesus, and that's what a Christian is:
Acts 11:25-26
25 Barnabas went out to Tarsus to look for Saul. 26 When he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. It happened, that for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught many people. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

You have a choice here to believe that the facts of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 are all that these disciples were taught. But that's not the case.

Paul himself left a record of what he taught to both Jews and Gentiles. Let's call this one Exhibit A:
Acts 20-20-21
(... you know...) 20 how I did not hold back from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks (Gentiles) 1) repentance toward God, and 2) faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

And this one Exhibit B:
Acts 26:19-21
19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds. 21 That is why some Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me.

Be sure that Paul preached the above to the Corinthians while he was with them:
Acts 18:9-11
9 The Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, "Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; 10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city." 11 He lived there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

The purpose of his letters to them was to strengthen them and to correct them. There is nothing needing to be corrected if someone just believes what 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 says. But the Christians in Corinth needed to be strengthened on how to walk with God, understanding well what the walk of a believer/disciple is all about, especially in an environment full of false teachers passing as "men of God" (cf. Acts 20:29-31; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15). We are still in that perilous environment today and it is worse!

Notice two key things in what the apostle Paul taught: 1) repentance which is how one gets reconciled to God, forgiven of past sins and given a clean slate with God on the merit of Jesus' blood; and  2) faith in Jesus. Both of these things have been under attack by Satan for 2000 years now. You must be diligent about standing on the truth concerning these things.

Now some words from Jesus:
Luke 6:46
Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say?

John 14:15, 21
15 If you love me, keep my commandments.
21 He that has my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 12:46-48
46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness. 47 And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

//Comment: Jesus' words are not just true facts that He was speaking. He was giving instructions to those who were his disciples who trusted, loved and followed Him faithfully. They followed Him by obeying his word.

48 He who rejects me, and does not accept my words, has one who judges him. The word that I spoke will judge him on the last day.

John 8:31-36
31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free?’”

//Comment: This same unbelief is in Christians who do not believe that what they call "salvation" is about being set free from their sins [video link], not just forgiven their past sins up to the point of coming to Jesus and hearing "I forgive you, now go and sin no more" (cf. John 8:11). See Romans 6:16-18 and Acts 3:22-26 also.

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 A slave does not live in the house forever. A son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Now we can have Christians ("believers") who are still in bondage to sin, still not set free by the Son (saved), and believing anything a false teacher will say as a lie on top of a lie.

John 8:12
Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

To follow Jesus is doing something. It's a work of faith. The Bible says this:
"
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also" (James 2:26).

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision amounts to anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith working through love.

A parallel to the above is 1 Corinthians 7:19:
Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God [is what matters].

All throughout the Bible, faith moves people to act in obedience to God (Hebrews 11 gives several examples). It's never about "trusting" in what was done and doing nothing.

James 1:21-25
21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be DOERS of the word, and NOT ONLY HEARERS, deluding your own selves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like someone looking at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of person he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect Law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this person will be blessed in what he does.

1 John 2:3-4
3 This is how we know that we know Him: if we keep his commandments. 4 One who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous.

Don't fear to do what God expects you to do as a believer/disciple of Jesus. How do you or do you even have to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12) when your salvation hangs only on believing the facts of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 and doing nothing? There is nothing to fear about these basic facts ever changing:

* Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures
* He was buried
* He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures

Believers/disciples of Jesus obey Him; believing/having faith in Jesus means obeying Him as One who is trusted, loved, and worthy to be followed to death!

Here is John 3:36 making the parallel clear:
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."

John 3:36 is not a contradiction to John 3:16 that everyone knows:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

Matthew 7:21-29
21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did not we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ 23 And then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.’* 24 “Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, will be compared to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. 25 And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine, and does not do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” 28 And it happened, when Jesus had finished saying these things, that the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he taught them with authority, and not like their scribes.

* Practicing lawlessness is going on sinning "under grace," in contradiction to Romans 6:1-2, Romans 6:12-15, 1 John 3:6, 1 John 3:9, 1 John 2:29 for instance. It's receiving the grace of God in vain or to no effect. In fact, it's the believing in vain as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:2.

The grace of God is so described:
Titus 2:11-14
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

The above is about the walk of faith that Jesus calls us to. His words are the foundation for that walk of faith. I pray you receive those scriptures for what they say. Repentance itself, as the other side of the coin, is another critical teaching under massive attack.

Charles Stanley Preaches a False Gospel

This is Charles Stanley teaching on Genuine Repentance:

Yet he can address salvation and not once mention repentance:

Can a Saved Person Live a Life of Sin and Remain Saved? - Charles Stanley

Here again he gives "A Right View of Repentance"
24:30 audio message accessed 3/19/2019, not found on 6/22/2020;
            Not found on 7/06/2022

But it's tricky to see the deception. He will not put repentance as a practical prerequisite to salvation. Yet at the same time he is saying there is no salvation without repentance and faith (as two sides of the same coin). The underlying lie comes in at 15:06... It's about having been "forgiven 2000 years ago". Listen from 14:47 to 15:14. I am convinced he KNOWS what genuine repentance is, yet refuses to put it where it belongs in the call of the Gospel, in the context of salvation, without any added confusing assumptions.

As for Jesus, He sent his disciples out to preach repentance for the forgiveness of sins to all nations (Luke 24:47). That's repentance to the end that people who repent and believe the Good News (Mark 1:15) may be forgiven their past sins, reconciled to God and saved from their sins (being servants or slaves of their sins) to become servants of God as they put their faith in Jesus.

By 16:14 in the message it's clear that being "accepted by God" has nothing to do with repenting. However, these words are written:

Acts 10:34-35
34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him."

2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from unrighteousness.”

Repentance has all to do with turning away from unrighteousness and coming on the way of righteousness (2 Peter 2:21) and being faithful to God so as to remain on that narrow way of righteousness with his grace helping.

At 21:41, another section of the same message, Charles Stanley answers the question: "Does a person have to stop sinning before they can be saved?"

Here he puts the work of conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit (John 16:8) to bring someone to be broken and repent as a work done from within a sinner by the indwelling Holy Spirit. But a sinner is not a saved person and the Holy Spirit does not come to indwell a sinner who is yet to be reconciled to God through repentance. The Holy Spirit is not given to those who do not become obedient to Jesus (Acts 5:30-32), having repented and being forgiven. That's the point where one has a heart 100% surrendered to Jesus, not a 100% cleaned up life in every way in every point. That's the point where God begins his work of transformation in those who get saved, losing their lives to find it in Jesus (Mark 8:35), having become obedient to Jesus in their hearts (Hebrews 5:9).

This is all high level deception that's hard to detect. Charles Stanley is a very eloquent man. The bottom line is that according to his message, people can get "saved" while in their sins, with no (genuine) change of mind about sin. And there is no motivation to have that "genuine repentance" because of the assumptions of having been already forgiven 2000 years ago and so forth. No "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you  double-minded" (James 4:8). No "
Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves" (James 1:21-22)

Charles Stanley also believes in unconditional eternal security or Once Saved Always Saved™. So, it's never a life and death matter for a believer assumed to be saved to continue practicing some sin and not yet have repented and turned away from his unrighteous thoughts and wicked ways (Isaiah 55:6-7). It's salvation before repentance (that's backwards), and freedom from sin (John 8:36, Romans 6:18) is not what "being saved" is about in that scheme.

The Goal of Repentance

Repentance According to the Bible

The following are scriptures calling people to repentance or describing what God expects in making that call.

Isaiah 1:16-18
16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson,They shall be as wool.

Isaiah 55:6-7
6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.

Jeremiah 8:6
I listened and heard, But they do not speak aright. No man repented of his wickedness, Saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turned to his own course, As the horse rushes into the battle.

Ezekiel 14:6
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.

Ezekiel 18:20-23, 30
20 The soul that sins, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. 21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he has committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? says the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

Ezekiel 33:11
11 Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’

Acts 8:22-23
22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.

James 1:21-22
21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness [that's repentance], receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word [that's faith], and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

James 4:8-10
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

Revelation 2:5
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

2 Chronicles 7:14
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Matthew 12:41
The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.

Read Jonah 3:10 to learn what Jesus was saying that the people of Nineveh can teach to our generation about repentance.

REPENT OR PERISH
Luke 13:1-5
1 There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

Matthew 21:28-32
28 But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, 'Son, go work today in the vineyard.' 29 He answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind, and went. 30 And he came to the other, and said the same thing. And he answered and said, 'I go, sir,' but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into the Kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you did not even repent afterward, that you might believe him.

So, Jesus taught that the people who believed John the Baptist's message repented and that showed that they believed him.

Jesus sent his apostles to preach repentance to all nations:
Luke 24:46-47
46 Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."

On the day of Pentecost, people asked Peter and the other apostles what they must do to be saved and he answered to them:
Acts 2:37-38
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is not given to those who do not repent to turn from rebellion in sin to obedience:
Acts 5:30-32
30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 31 Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

The apostle Paul preached repentance:
Acts 17:30-31
30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to everyone by raising him from the dead.

Acts 20:20-21
(you know...) 20 how I did not hold back from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks (Gentiles) repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 26:19-20
19 "So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds."

Many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1). Don't listen to them and make the fatal mistake of either dismissing repentance or getting repentance wrong.

2 Timothy 2:15, 19
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, correctly handling the word of truth.
19 However God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work [not sin!].

Repent! Obey Jesus! Turn away from sin! Be saved!

More:
Romans 2:4-7
4  Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5  But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6  who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:”... (speaking for both Jews and Gentiles - verses 9-10)

2 Corinthians 7:9-10
9  I now rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you were made sorry to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly way, that you might suffer loss by us in nothing. 10  For godly sorrow leads to repentance leading to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world leads to death.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2 Corinthians 12:20-21
20 For I am afraid that by any means, when I come, I might find you not the way I want to, and that I might be found by you as you do not desire; that by any means there would be strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, whisperings, proud thoughts, riots; 21  that again when I come my God would humble me before you, and I would mourn for many of those who have sinned before now, and not repented of the uncleanness and sexual immorality and lustfulness which they committed.

2 Timothy 2:24-26
24  The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient, 25  in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth, 26  and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.

Hebrews 6:1-6
1 Therefore leaving the doctrine of the first principles of Christ, let us press on to perfection—not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God, 2 of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits. 4 For concerning those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify the Son of God for themselves again, and put Him to open shame.

PS:
Comment on the understanding of repentance being a daily endeavor
That understanding is strengthened by the belief that being a slave to sin (John 8:34) has no end and that repentance does not in fact usher a new life (Romans 6) and a new walk in righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:17-24). In Luke 15, Jesus gave three parables to show what repentance is supposed to accomplish: a return to God, reconciliation with God to be forgiven of past sins, and passing from lost to found and from being dead to being alive. The last parable is the well-known parable of the prodigal son who returns to his father. Remark that once he did that, his father made a feast for him. So, he was not going back to his same old paths that had dishonored his father the very next day to be lost again and find himself at a place where he needed to repent again for the same sins and return to his father over and over (and perhaps have a feast made for him each time). No! That would be a mockery of his father (a figure representing God). All this is to say that repentance, in the Bible, as a means of coming into a relationship with God, is not a daily endeavor. It accomplishes a reconciliation with God and then it's fellowship with God, walking in the light (1 John 1:5-7) going forward —not going backwards from that (Luke 9:62; Luke 17:32; 2 Peter 2:20-22). And by his grace (Titus 2:11-14; Romans 6:1-2, 12-15), one can indeed stand, walk with God and not go back to old sinful ways. The way forward is to grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).

PSS:
Comment on how many times a person may repent
People who are backslidden are called to repent to make things right with God (because they aren't). And since they were once saved from sin (John 8:36; Romans 6:5-7, 14, 18), they must have repented already once to get into a relationship with God in the first place. This was the case for the five (out of seven) churches that Jesus told to repent in Revelation 2:5, 2:16, 2:22, 3:3 and 3:19. They all received a warning to repent, and that meant they were facing a life and death situation because of their backsliding. They had to repent or they would eventually perish/be destroyed (not be saved). So, their backsliding wasn't a normal nor an expected situation. And it does not warrant that any believer today would need to be talking about being saved (set free from sin) and foreseeing multiple future instances of repentance right from the start of their relationship with God. That's not the picture to have of neither repentance nor salvation. Going back to sin after having repented and being saved from sin is not the plan. And this lines up with Jesus' words in John 8:35, saying that a slave doesn't remain in the house forever. That goes also for someone who was saved/freed from sin and went back to being a slave of sin by his/her own doing, selling him/herself back to sin.

People do fall away from the faith, from being previously in it and failing to endure to the end (Matthew 10:22, Hebrews 2:1-3, Hebrews 10:38-39, 2 Peter 2:20-22). And for those who are unable to repent an nth time (e.g. Hebrews 6:4-6, Hebrews 10:26-29, Hebrews 12:17), there won't be any change of destination for them from the present time to the time of Jesus' return and of the final judgment. There is a point of no return for someone who would come to know God and believe a lie of the devil and turn away from that spiritual intimacy with the most blessed almighty God.
