Description

Addressing the 1 John 1:8 Stronghold

Addressing the 1 John 1:8 Stronghold
1 John 1:8-10
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

1 John 1:8-10 are verses often taken out of context. They speak of the reality that "not having sinned," or "being cleansed from all sin," or having fellowship with God in the light cannot be claimed by someone who is yet to have turned to God in the way that He expects:

1 John 1:5-7
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

So, the 1 John 1:8 & 10 scriptures affirm that there is a place for someone who is walking in darkness to admit being a a sinner—not yet a servant of God. Romans 3:23 speaks of the same reality that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." That truth must be acknowledged by any sinner who will turn to God to be saved, through answering the call to repentance and faith in Jesus, which means hearing his word and obeying Him—being a doer of the word (see Acts 20:20-21 and James 1:21-22). One who is not ready to admit being a sinner separated from God because of sin precisely (see Isaiah 59:2) and would claim to have fellowship with God (1 John 1:7), that person would be a liar.

The 1 John 1:8 & 10 scriptures do not support a reality of ongoing sin and 1 John 1:9 confession for the supposedly saved person, especially when the confession is in hypocrisy or void of any resolution to call wrong what is wrong, and turn away and stay away from it, as the grace of God enables a servant of God to do.

It helps to see the grace of God this way:
Titus 2:11-14
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, 12 instructing us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly desires, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age; 13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.

Deliberate sinning is not what someone in Christ is called to. And confession of sins implies contrition about the sins being confessed in true repentance, and only that leads to the forgiveness of those sins being confessed:

Proverbs 28:13
The one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will find mercy.

So, that way, on a basis of genuine repentance, the door won't be left open and unguarded to just walk back to any such previously confessed and forsaken sins without resistance. That is what results in ongoing sin. Repenting is not just a matter of admitting to God, "I have sinned" and then staying in the same place of choosing sin over obedience to God. That shows no repentance at all. And the greatest danger is to never have gotten repentance right once and for all in the first place, which leads to believing the 1 John 1:8-9 myth that going on sinning and confessing even the same deliberate sins to no end is what the Christian life is about.

Going on sinning deliberately is knowing right from wrong and keeping on making the choice to do wrong (sin), or just being ignorant of God's ways as a sinner (Acts 17:30). The 1 John 1:8 scripture is not saying that servants of God need to keep on confessing that they are actually trapped in sin or in bondage to sin, which is precisely what Jesus would have saved them from (John 8:34-36, Romans 6:16-18). Because sin will not have dominion over someone who is under grace, and not under law (and its condemnation) as it would be the case for a sinner who still has not repented:

Romans 6:14
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

The place of no condemnation in Christ Jesus is not a place of being still in bondage to the law of sin and death:

Romans 8:1-2
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

If one approaches God the way He expects, the way forward from that square one will be clear. It's doing righteousness as a righteous servant of God or a saint who has died to sins—not keeping on being a sinner or worker of iniquity (Matthew 7:23) and admitting that or else the truth is not in you:

1 John 2:4
He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 3:6-7
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

1 Peter 2:21-24
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps, 22 who “committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth.” 23 Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously; 24 who his own self bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose wounds you were healed.

Remember, the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God, as the Bible warns in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 or Galatians 5:19-21, for instance. These scriptures speak of sins that are rooted in rebellion and the truth is not in someone who is walking in rebellion against God and not keeping his or her heart pure.

Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

1 Peter 1:14-16
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires as in your ignorance, 15 but just as He who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; 16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."

There is no holiness or sanctification to speak of on a foundation of ongoing sin:
1 Peter 4:1-3
1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the desires of men, but for the will of God. 3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.

Hebrews 12:14
Pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

To New Beginnings

To New Beginnings

Turning your back
on something
happens
in your mind

It's up to you

You
have
free will

You can turn your back
on a bad job
or a bad relationship
or an addiction
(an addiction
is a bad work relationship)

And when
you turn your back
on anything
that is
    not
    God's will
    for you

He will help you
move away from it
once and for all

Then
new beginnings
can come

Notes on Hell

The KJV Bible Translates Three Distinct Greek Words as 'Hell'!

Time to study!

G1067: Gehenna

G86: Hades
https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G86&t=KJV

This corresponds to the Hebrew word 'Sheol':

G5020: Tartaroo
https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G5020&t=KJV

Note 1:
Jesus did not "go to hell" as we commonly understand "going to hell" in contemporary English. But we know He was put in a grave, in which He also did not stay.

Acts 2:27
Because you will not leave my soul in hell (G86), neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption.
Act 2:31
He (David) seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell (G86), neither his flesh did see corruption.

Note 2:
The lake of fire into which death and hell (Hades — the grave) will be thrown (Revelation 20:14) is the process through which someone's existence will come to a permanent/perpetual/eternal end instead of continuing as in the case of a person who had received the gift of eternal life in Jesus (Romans 6:23). The wages of sin is death, not remaining alive in hell (Gehenna being understood in this case): the place about which Jesus said that it is better to enter [eternal] life missing a body part than to have all body parts, including any that would be occasions to commit sin, and be thrown into it
(Matthew 5:29-30). That hell (Gehenna) is necessarily synonymous with destruction.

Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Enter by the narro
w gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and constricted is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Therefore, someone who is living is sin is on the way that leads to destruction, not the way that leads to an eternal life of being in torment in hell (Gehenna).

Call to Repentance – Scriptures

(Call to Turn From Disobedience to Obedience)

Acts 17:30-31
30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now He commands that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because he has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom He has ordained; of which He has given assurance to everyone by raising him from the dead.

Luke 6:46-49
46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. 48 He is like someone building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But he who hears, and does not do, is like someone who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

Hebrews 5:9
And having been made perfect, He [Jesus] became the author of eternal salvation to all those who obey Him

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

Isaiah 59:2
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that He will not hear.

2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Isaiah 55:6-7
6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near: 7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Luke 5:31-32
31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

James 1:21-22
21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness [that's repentance], receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word [that's faith/obedience], and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

James 4:7-8
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Psalm 119:11
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Acts 26:19-20 - NIV
19 "So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds."

Matthew 3:8 - NLT
Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.

Is the Rapture Before the Tribulation and the Second Coming of Jesus?

Image by Sabrina Eickhoff from Pixabay.

For those who believe the rapture is what will take them out of trouble while those who are "left behind" remain in the world to suffer tribulation, I hope the following will invite you to study further:

Matthew 24:29‭-‬31
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

By holding to a "pre-tribulation" rapture, what is implied is that those elect who will be gathered in the Matthew 24:31 scripture are people who got saved after the people who were saved before the tribulation were already gathered out in the rapture.

So then, where does the rapture happen before this Matthew 24:29 passage?

Let's consider some relevant scriptures where Jesus is warning his people about what is to come in the end times:
Matthew 24:9‭-‬13
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

If there was a rapture for the elect as a way to escape tribulation, why does not Jesus mention it? What is the point of giving warning to his followers about the terrible times that they will face and that they will need to endure through to the end?

Matthew 24:20‭-‬22
20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.

Matthew 24:23-25
23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand.

Then it is also fitting to ask, "Why is the saving of Noah and his family from the flood being compared to the saving of the elect at the time of Jesus' second coming?"

Matthew 24:36-39
36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Once Noah and his family were safe in the ark he built, no one else was going to get saved out of that flood. Being in the ark was the only way to not be destroyed by the flood once it came. Getting into the ark was not like being part of a kind of pre-flood rapture. The ark went through the flood and the raging waters, but it was the safe place for the few who were God's servants. Flood or not, that is where those who would be saved needed to be. And they had to exercise their faith every moment that they were in that ark, even as the waters were rising all around them. They were saved by grace through faith from the waters of the great flood. They experienced the flood as much as the servants of God will be aware of the fire that will "melt the elements" upon Jesus' return or  "take vengeance" on the wicked (see 2 Peter 3:10 and 2 Thessalonians 1:8). But the fire won't hurt them.

Now Jesus is the safe "place" for God's servants to be in. They are already suffering trouble in the world (John 15:18-20). But they are safe "in Jesus." Being "in Jesus" does not mean not facing any kind of trouble because of being raptured out of the world to avoid tribulation. The mindset that would go with that is not from the Bible. Jesus has promised to keep his faithful servants from the hour of trial (see Revelation 3:10); and all his servants are exhorted to watch and pray to be counted worthy to escape the trouble that He announced for the whole world (see Luke 21:36). But that is not what is being called "rapture." And the greatest concern is that the promise of a pre-tribulation rapture is being presented to people who won't be diligent (because of what they believe) about being ready to stand before the Son of Man.

Luke 21:36
Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.

Revelation 3:10
Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

Doesn't the mindset of expecting to be raptured out of tribulation undermine having the mindset of making sure one is ready for the day of Jesus' coming, seeing to it that one is found by Him blameless on that day?

Matthew 24:44
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

1 Corinthians 1:4-8
4 I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, 5 that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, 6 even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, 7 so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What is that "day of our Lord Jesus Christ" that the apostle Paul ministered to Jesus' followers so that they would be "blameless" on it (1 Corinthians 1:8)?

They are certainly "waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 1:7). Is their mind then on a rapture to escape tribulation? Can that be inferred from the scriptures?

The moment of the “rapture” is described like this in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17:
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Note the trumpet of God and the gathering together of the saints in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

Compare Matthew 24:31:
And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Note the trumpet sound and the gathering together of God’s elect in this passage also. One must decide if the two passages describe the same event and have the idea of leaving people (unbelievers) behind to face tribulation while escaping it oneself and putting Jesus’ return, “the day of the Son of Man,” further into the future. If that idea is not in the scriptures, it has been injected into the relevant texts that are read on these topics by people who are led by their doctrines that they want to teach and not by the Holy Spirit.

Suffering tribulation in the world is a reality that servants of God must intimately be acquainted with. And as it may come for them to face a “great” tribulation, their faith is what will sustain them through it and keep them faithful to God to the end.

John 16:33
These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Acts 14:21-22
21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”

See also:
1 Thessalonians 5:21-23
21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 3:9-14
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless;

2 Thessalonians 1:3-12
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, 4 so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, 5 which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; 6 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. 11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
