Isaiah 64:6 Abuse

Isaiah 64:5:6-7b

“You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned— In these ways we continue; And we need to be saved.”

Isaiah 64:6-7b
6 “But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away. 7 And there is no one who calls on Your name, Who stirs himself up to take hold of You; [...].”

This often quoted Isaiah 64:6 verse is not a universal truth that applies to everyone at all times. Not everyone is living in sin and needing to be saved. A whole lot for sure, but a few do get saved (Luke 13:23-24, 1 Peter 4:18). When a person gets saved, Jesus removes them from the deadly sin trap they are in, they are reconciled to God to start walking faithfully with Him. They are not in a permanent state of backsliding as in Isaiah 64:6-7. So, with everything being said about identity in Christ, this is certainly a case of mistaken identity to apply this verse to a saved person or born again believer, unless it's a case of backsliding or return to one's vomit as in the 2 Peter 2:20-22 case.

1 John 3:6-7
“Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.”

Isaiah 64:6 in no way describes born again followers of Jesus who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit:

Romans 8:1-2
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
