How To Crucify The Flesh

Image by Sabrina Eickhoff from Pixabay.

Crucifying the flesh is about denying it its cravings and starving it to death. That comes with an attitude of total submission to God and a desire to please Him above all, especially above oneself. People who belong to Jesus have the Holy Spirit to put to death the deeds of the body (Romans 8:12-13). But, in repentance, the point where one responds to the call of Jesus and denies him/herself, takes up his/her cross to follow Him (Mark 8:34), the cross deals its fatal blow to the "old man." So, these can be written about such persons who have followed that path and come to (belong to) Jesus:

Galatians 5:24
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.¹

Romans 6:5-7
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of his [Jesus'] death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

Being dead with Christ means to no longer be a slave of sin who is sinning (John 8:34-36, Romans 6:16-18). Romans 6:7 could not make the point of being "dead" clearer, saying "he who has died has been freed from sin." That is a death by the cross.

Remark that the cross (that kills the sinful passions that arise from having a body or "flesh") is largely not being preached nowadays (2 Timothy 4:3-4 confirmation), and people are being declared "born again" through some way that the Bible does not teach. People who are affected by false teachings presented as the Gospel of Jesus Christ never in fact die in the way the Bible speaks of. Therefore, most can't relate to being dead to sin and alive to God (Romans 6:11) in a factual way, but usually only through mental gymnastics. And as a result of omitting the cross from the preaching of the Gospel, or simply not preaching true biblical repentance, 'salvation' in this present day Christian world, for most, means something else than being set free from bondage to sin as Jesus taught (John 8:31-36).

Philippians 3:18-19
18 For many, of whom I have often told you, and now tell you with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ, 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who think about earthly things.

But Christians are rightly so exhorted:
Colossians 3:5-10
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

These exhortations are necessary for followers of Jesus because a person only needs to feed his/her flesh that should have been put to death in Christ (by the cross), for it to come back alive and it will surely rule him/her life and drag him/her right back to bondage to sin worse than before (e.g. 2 Peter 2:20-22). There is then no longer freedom in Christ to speak of if that happens. That's what would be called "losing salvation." The devil is always seeking whom he may devour, so Christians are forcefully warned (1 Peter 5:8, Acts 20:29-31).

Suffer The Cross To Overcome Addictions

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQKBVZh0-tlLQ9tcwoYBOyf0te8V7CNh4

When you do what Jesus says, you will have victory with Him:

Mark 8:34
When He had called the people to himself, with his disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

When you deny yourself and take up your cross to follow Jesus, you cannot at the same time follow after sin. So, you will refuse to give in to a temptation; you will suffer in your flesh. But if you are willing to deny your flesh and suffer with the help of God, you will see his deliverance. You have to count not sinning (offending God) as more precious than avoiding pain and diving into sin. That’s a self-sacrifice you would make out of love for God because you want to please Him and no longer serve/please yourself and your flesh and continue to sin (1 Peter 4:1-3, Romans 6:16).

The key to victory is true repentance. This is what fuels the addiction: constant surrender to temptations to sin (therefore surrender to the devil to do his will - 2 Timothy 2:26) rather than surrender to God to do his will. It’s an idol you have in your heart, something you value more than God. It's up to you to make a choice and act according to the choice you have made to serve God rather than to serve your “self” and go on sinning. And the results will follow according to God's promise: "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you..." (James 4:8).

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been tested, he will receive a crown of life, which Go
d has promised to those who love him.

Luke 6:46-49
46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. 48 He is like someone building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But he who hears, and does not do, is like someone who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

1 Peter 4:1-2

1 Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin; 2 that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for human desires, but for the will of God.

You have to show God that you are serious and that you trust Him to help you when you have made the decision to stop sinning no matter what comes your way. You need to have the faith to face the unknown with God when you stand your ground and refuse to give in to the temptation, even when it is very strong and you’re at your wit’s end. Focus on Jesus and expect his help. That’s how the rubber of your faith hits the road to freedom from your addiction. Believe that Jesus will come and rescue you, and by his grace He will give you power to be an overcomer and not be overcome.

ADDENDUM

Prayer  Only Is Not The Answer.
You also need to be doing what God expects you to be doing. Your deliverance is not going to come suddenly from just praying for deliverance (either your own prayers or the prayers of other people for you). You have to be fighting, too. Have you ever resisted doing something you knew was a sin, and it was hard and you still stood fighting and in the end, you did not commit the sin? If you have done that once, then you can do it again. You can do it every time you are tempted to sin. But if you never resisted the devil so that you would not sin, you are not showing to God that you really want to be done with sin. You are not showing to God that you have faith in Him bringing you to a new life where you are no longer struggling with sin. So, prayers won't be answered if your attitude is wrong about sin and about not sinning (Isaiah 59:1-2, 1 Peter 3:12). But if you are fighting, God will strengthen you and you will be stronger for every new fight until you are overcoming sin and not struggling any more. That's the plan and you need to keep it in mind. Listen to this video below a few times attentively and make notes on how you can start fighting. Your love for God is key.

Are You an Ex-Sinner Calling yourself a Sinner?

Image by Sabrina Eickhoff from Pixabay.

If you are a sinner, the Good News is for you!

Jesus spoke this word:

Luke 5:31-32
31 Jesus answered them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Repentance and faith in Jesus is the path for sinners to become righteous:
Acts 20:20-21
[you know] 20 how I did not hold back from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

That's about all God has to say to sinners: Repent or else be ready to be punished in the final judgement. And that's the Good News for those who "hunger and thirst for righteousness" (Matthew 5:6) and desire with all their heart to live for God and be through with sin.

If you have responded to God's call by the Gospel to sinners, you have been forgiven your past sins and have been made righteous. You have been reconciled to God, from being previously his enemy as a sinner. You are no longer a sinner. Some synonymous for "sinner" in the Bible are "wicked", "rebellious", "unrighteous", "disobedient", "worker of iniquity/lawlessness", "evil doer", "transgressor." Are you still that? That's not what God calls his servants, his children, his people.

1 Peter 2:9-10
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Romans 5:6-11
6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly [sinners]. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified* by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Galatians 2:17
But if, while we seek to be justified* by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? God forbid!

*justified: made right with God / declared "righteous" by God

The thief on the cross became an ex-thief before Jesus could promise him a place with Him in paradise! His heart was changed and Jesus saw that. See The Salvation of the Thief Who Was on the Cross. He came to hate his life as a sinner up to that point, so he was ready to receive the new life in Christ (Romans 6:4; John 12:25) if he had remained alive. He had lost all pleasure in robbing people right there on the cross as he came to fear God and repented. If he did not rob for the pleasure of hurting people, then he certainly came to be in agreement with God that stealing is wrong and deserving of punishment by his divine hand. Such change happened. Every sinner who comes to God becomes an ex-(some wicked thing). The people of God are not sinners, but anyone coming to God in the first place cannot say, "I have no sin/not sinned," as then they would be liars deceiving themselves (1 John 1:8). [See this post about the popular incorrect application of 1 John 1:8: Problem in the Church: 1 John 1:8.]

The people of God are ex-sinners — He calls them his saints, or holy ones:

2 Thessalonians 10-10
9 These [the wicked] shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.

Matthew 13:40-43
40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

It's the righteous whose prayers God hears:

John 9:31
We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, He listens to him.

1 Peter 3:12
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

Sin is what sinners are saved from!  [video]

Acts 3:19
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord

Sinners who repent and are converted are put on a path of righteousness; they have turned away from the path of unrighteousness/sin. Jesus has set them free from that path of sin (John 8:34-36, Romans 6:16-18)! The grace of God teaches them to say 'No' to unrighteousness/sin (Romans 6:1-2, 12-19; Titus 2:11-14). Sin is not the way forward for them. Sin is not the center of their world. Jesus, the King of righteousness, is!

2 Timothy 2:19
However God's firm foundation stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness."

Righteousness and holiness is the path of the righteous or saint:

Revelation 22:11-12
11 The one being unrighteous, let him be unrighteous still; and he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he who is righteous, let him do righteousness still; and he who is holy, let him be holy still.”  12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with me, to give to each one according to his work.

Hebrews 12:14
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord

Sinners have no connection with holiness whatsoever, because faith which implies obedience to God is the path that leads to righteousness, the practice of which leads to holiness (John 3:36; Romans 6:16-19). See Faith Implies Obedience.

Salvation belongs to the righteous:

Psalm 118:14-15, 19-20
14 The LORD is my strength and song. He has become my salvation.  15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous. "The right hand of the LORD does valiantly.
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness. I will enter into them and praise the LORD.  20 This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous will enter into it.

The righteous are called to remain faithful to the end:

Revelation 12:11
And they overcame him (the devil) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives even unto death.

Revelation 14:12
Here is the endurance of the saints, those keeping the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

May Jesus bless you!

Are We All Sinners?

Image by Sabrina Eickhoff from Pixabay.

Exercise: use a bible app to look for all the verses in the bible that mention 'sinner' (or 'sinners') and see what the word is saying. Then look for all the verses in the bible that mention the 'righteous' and see what the word is saying. Pray before you begin. Read whole passages to get their context (as opposed to reading isolated verses and risk taking them out of context).

We have all sinned and been sinners in our life (1 John 1:8). But the Good News is that we are called to repent and be converted into whom the Bible calls the righteous (ex-sinners who have been made right with God by the blood of Jesus and remain faithful to Him and his ways till the end.) Consider what the apostle Peter must have understood when He wrote this:
“If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?” (1 Peter 4:18).

Sharing the truth from the bible that has a lot to say about the righteous (not "self-righteous") vs. the sinners. These are a few scriptures:

1 John 3:7
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

Ezekiel 18:20
The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

Luke 5:31-32
31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Luke 15:7
I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

Proverbs 11:30-31
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that wins souls is wise. 31  Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

Galatians 2:17
But if, while we seek to be justified [declared righteous] by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

Matthew 13:43
Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

There are many more.

A sinner who receives this message and obeys it becomes righteous.

A conversion happens:
(from) sinner ➡️ (to) righteous

Has that conversion happened for you?

If we are all sinners and can only be called sinners at all points in our lives, who is Jesus talking to here, making a contrast with sinners?

Luke 6:32-35
32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.

John 15:3
Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken to you.

Acts 10:15
... “What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean.”

1 Corinthians 9:11
Such were some of you [unrighteous/sinners], but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the Spirit of our God.

Titus 3:3-7
3 For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of rebirth and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; 7 that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of everlasting life.

+++

Malachi 3:16-18
16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke one with another; and the LORD listened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before him, for those who feared the LORD, and who honored his name. 17 They shall be mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “my own possession in the day that I make, and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him. 18 Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn’t serve him.

Study diligently. May God be with you!

ADDENDUM
Luke 18:13 may show a sinner's prayer, but it's not what you are likely to find practiced today in churches. That man was repentant, which is key. And no one led him to repeat any words. He spoke to God from his heart as the weight of his sin was heavy upon his heart. He understood that he wasn't right with God and needed to be forgiven / saved / made right with God. Anyone who is truly repenting speaks to God, pleading for his forgiveness (ex: David in Psalm 51). So, whatever is said could be called a sinner's prayer. But no one should assume there is a formula for a sinner's prayer that works for all and leading people to say the prayer is the way to get them saved (that's certainly not taught from the Bible). Also, what would follow a sinner's prayer made from the heart is someone who is justified/made right with God/reconciled to God (on account of Jesus' sacrifice), so not a sinner still (cf. Galatians 2:17, Romans 5:6-11). Anywhere the generic sinner's prayer is being practiced, the people are likely to also embrace false teachings like "we are all sinners," before and after salvation, which begs to question the salvation they would speak of. Many are being forced to believe they are saved when that's not reality because teachings of men have been preferred to Jesus' teachings.
