Anger in the Bible — Is it a Sin?

Anger is not a sin in itself but it can be sinful (for instance, anger "without cause"):
Matthew 5:22

Anger can be provoked:
Colossians 3:21

Anger is exhorted against:
Ephesians 4:31, Colossians 3:8

Anger should not be allowed to become sinful (for instance, giving place to hatred or wrath or any other sin opposed to the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23):
Ephesians 4:26-27
Romans 12:18-21

But anger is justified against wickedness (evil/sin):
Mark 3:5
Matthew 21:12-23
Ephesians 5:11
Galatians 2:11-13

And God's judgement against sinners¹ will be the final expression of his anger against them and thus his justice will be served:
Psalm 7:11
John 3:36
Romans 1:18
Jude 1:14-15
2 Thessalonians 1:3-10

1. That's sinners who do not repent and get converted as God has commanded for salvation (Acts 2:38, Acts 3:19, Acts 17:30-31, Acts 20:20-21). That's people who cannot speak of a transformation by God's power as highlighted in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 or Titus 3:3-7 for instance, thus remaining on the wrong side of the contrast Jesus will make in the end according to the word in Revelation 22:11-12.

Bible Study on Sin

Image by Sabrina Eickhoff from Pixabay.

1 John 3:4-6
4 Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whosoever abides in Him does not sin: whosoever sins has not seen Him, neither known Him.

Sin is the transgression of the law

Romans 4:15
.... the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

Romans 13:10
Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Galatians 5:14
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 22:35-40
35 Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Although the Scriptures present sin in different ways as we explore below, it is basically a transgression of God's law, a violation of the divine precept of love, namely love for God with all one's heart, mind, soul and strength, and love for one's neighbor as one loves oneself.

John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love [is what matters].

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not burdensome.

1 Timothy 1:5-11
5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm. 8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

Sin as a result of not abiding in Jesus

John 15:4-6
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, except it abides in the vine; no more can you, except you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. 6 If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

While not abiding in Jesus can mean being disconnected from Jesus - not knowing Him (1 John 3:6), being connected alone to Jesus (having a relationship with Him) does not mean abiding in Him. Abiding as a branch in Jesus means remaining connected to Him, the vine, and depending on Him for every need. This dependence on Jesus as the source of life results in producing fruit that pleases God. Therefore, being obedient to Him (not transgressing the law) is abiding in Him.

1 John 3:24
And he that keeps his commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit which He gave us.

A branch is by definition a connected part of a tree, so, a branch that is not abiding in Jesus represents a believer who doesn't intentionally continue to have his eyes, heart and mind fixed on Jesus. That branch will eventually be cut off (John 15:6) if no correction is made. Because sin will come from not abiding in Jesus (1 John 3:6), and therefore the believer won't exemplify walking as Jesus walked (1 John 2:6).

1 John 2:3-6
3 And by this we know that we know Him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that says, I know Him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: by this we know that we are in Him. 6 He that says he abides in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.

Sin is darkness and cannot fellowship with the light:
1 John 1:5-7
5 This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practice the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Sin as a result of acting in doubt rather than in faith

Romans 14:22‭-‬23
22 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

The topic in the above scripture is what food a person of faith may eat, but a general principle is given about acting in faith versus acting in doubt. Sin arises from having doubts about one's actions, decisions or positions. All these should be a reflection of one's faith. Even weak faith is more pleasing to God than a lack of faith about a matter or course of action. The apostle Paul thus also exhorts in Romans 14 to be mindful of a brother or sister of weaker faith than one's own, and to not sin by judging that brother or that sister. That servant of God shall give an account of himself/herself to God. So, one should not thus put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in that person's way by unwarranted judgments (Romans 14:12-13; James 4:11-12).

The Scriptures thus do not deny that views may differ between believers about the same matter. But each servant of God should exercise the faith he has. God can direct the actions of his servants according to the faith He gives them for his purposes and his glory to be revealed through their lives.

Sin as a result of omission to do the right thing

James 4:17
Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

To finish, let us consider Matthew Henry's Commentary on James 4:17:

"V. We are taught, in the whole of our conduct, to act up to our own convictions, and, whether we have to do with God or men, to see that we never go contrary to our own knowledge (v. 17): To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin; it is aggravated sin; it is sinning with a witness; and it is to have the worst witness against his own conscience. Observe, 1. This stands immediately connected with the plain lesson of saying, If the Lord will, we shall do this or that; they might be ready to say, "This is a very obvious thing; who knows not that we all depend upon almighty God for life, and breath, and all things?" Remember then, if you do know this, whenever you act unsuitably to such a dependence, that to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin, the greater sin. 2. Omissions are sins which will come into judgment, as well as commissions. He that does not the good he knows should be done, as well as he who does the evil he knows should not be done, will be condemned. Let us therefore take care that conscience be rightly informed, and then that it be faithfully and constantly obeyed; for, if our own hearts condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God [1 John 3:21]; but if we say, We see, and do not act suitably to our sight, then our sin remaineth, Jn. 9:41."

"Am I Saved?" Why Do You Ask?

There are many videos on YouTube and many blogs/websites that purpose to address questions such as, "Am I saved?" or "How to know if I am saved?" But there is no reason any saved person would need to wonder about that.

What is salvation? It's redemption from the bondage of sin (John 8:34-36, Romans 6:4-7, 16-18). Redemption is release from bondage by the payment of a ransom. In the context of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that payment is his blood that He shed on the cross (e.g. Acts 20:28, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 2 Peter 2:1). When people believe that Jesus shed his blood to save them personally, then that payment is personally applied for their release from bondage to sin when they repent and believe in Jesus (Acts 20:20-21). They come out of the devil's snare (or death trap) that they are in before being saved (2 Timothy 2:26, Acts 26:18). A new life comes for the person who gets saved and is now "in Christ," and no longer under condemnation because of sin precisely (Romans 8:1-2). That new life is given by the power of God. It's a miracle. A "new birth" or regeneration occurs (Titus 3:3-7). That's a real experience, not something a person has to try to hold on to "by faith" and wrestle with his/her mind about whether it happened or not. If it happened, there will be evidences of that and a testimony (Revelation 12:11) that goes along with it.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Someone who was a prisoner and gets released out of jail does not need anyone to tell him/her, "Hey, you are not in jail now, look around, no jail cell." Or "Answer these 3 questions and you will know if you are in jail or not." That's ridiculous. Why? Because the person who is saved has tasted freedom. Freedom is not captivity. The experience of freedom is not the experience of bondage/slavery. It's only the truth out of Jesus' mouth that can set people free from sin when they become obedient to Him. That means submission to God's will, not doing one's own will anymore and choosing to serve self and sin rather than choosing to serve God.

John 8:31-36
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Salvation isn't a mindset that you get into because you have understood a few things from the Bible. It's the reality — in this present age — of no longer being a slave of sin!

Romans 6:16-18
16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

A saved person is a slave of righteousness. It's the complete opposite of being a slave of sin. What does a slave of righteousness do? Righteousness, not sin (these are opposites and they don't mix). False teachings will have you understand that Jesus covers your sins with his righteousness... But what about the part of Him coming into the world to save you from your sins, pulling you out of the death trap of sin? So, you have to ask, who is the "Jesus" who has saved you, the Son of God that the Bible speaks of or another "Jesus," a "false Christ" that has been presented to you, as the Bible also warns against those (Matthew 24:4-5, 2 Corinthians 11:4).

1 John 3:6-8
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

What we see everywhere because of the false teachings that abound (2 Timothy 4:3-4) is people wondering to various degrees if they are saved and others who want to argue about freedom while still sitting in the death trap of sin. The scriptures say they do not love the truth so that they may be saved, but instead have pleasure in unrighteousness/sin (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).

Saved people hate sin enough to keep themselves away from it by God's grace. The grace of God at work in one's life means sin no longer has power over that person (Romans 6:1-2, 14). So, when the reality is that one is living under the power of sin, the reality of being saved by grace and being free from sin is not there. The two opposite things can't co-exist.

Jesus also says that a slave does not remain in the house forever (John 8:35). Being in the house of God as free from sin/saved indeed then going back to being a slave of sin is a no-no. It's possible but it's a no-no (2 Peter 2:20-22). That's all Jesus is saying. In Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus addressed backsliders and told them to repent or they would perish (cf. Revelation 2:5, 2:16, 2:22, 3:3, 3:19). They would not be saved in the end just because they had been saved once, although they have failed to walk the walk of a Christian thereafter. John 15:4-6 teaches the same lesson about abiding in Jesus and failing to abide in Jesus.

One can always find a person that thinks prison life was better than being a free man or woman, and then finds his/her way back into prison. But the best "life" that person will have will be "life in prison," and inevitably, death will follow --not eternal life. Eternal life is guaranteed for those who have and maintain a (saving) relationship with Jesus Christ until the end (physical death or Jesus' second coming). Jesus warned people about dying in their sins (John 8:24). That means having denied Him, because He didn't come into the world for people to die in their sins, but to be saved from their sins (Matthew 1:21) as they get born again and the works of the devil are destroyed in their own lives (1 John 3:8-9).

Faith in Jesus means obedience to Him/submission to God and faithfulness in that.

Hebrews 5:9
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all those who obey Him,

Luke 6:46-49
46 “But why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to me, and hears my sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

John 12:46-48

46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears my words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects me, and does not receive my words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

There is no Christianity or salvation apart from obedience to God (the opposite of sinning).

Revelation 14:12
Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, who are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

The grace of God is an empowerment from God to walk in his ways faithfully to the end, until Jesus comes back for his people. They will be found ready like the wise virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) only if they have been saved by grace and have walked in that grace (not sin) until his return. Grace is not a cover for ongoing sin. Ongoing rebellion in the heart that produces the fruit of continuing to sin (knowing right from wrong and continuing to do wrong) is a contradiction to freedom from sin/salvation (John 8:36).

Titus 2:11-14
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, 12 instructing us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly desires, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age; 13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.

James 4:8
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Sinners have to cleanse their hands and purify their hearts to be saved. They have to be in 100% agreement with God about recognizing sin as evil that God hates and turning away from it. That's the call to repentance.

Counting the Cost of Pornography Addiction

This message is for anyone who is bound in porn addiction. Imagine that you had to pay to watch porn. Did you ever consider that with money in your hands, you would just pay for it to satisfy your lust? Did you consider that you would be blind to others around you that don't have money for their needs while you go and spend your money on porn? Did you consider that you would as well neglect your own family's present and future needs because of your investments in porn? Did you consider that you would be totally driven by selfishness because serving and pleasing yourself would have taken priority over serving and pleasing God? Are these things actually true of you right now?

Do you realize that you will give an account to Jesus for every cent that has passed through your hands? Now, you don't worry about money because the devil has made porn available to you for free. But you are still buying it. Loads of it for $0.00! Someone who wants you to die won't make it hard for you to get your hands on poison, especially if you are already calling that poison a "good thing." I guess we could get technical and get a cost from the portion of your phone data plan and maybe electricity use that goes into supporting your evil desire to watch porn. But the cost of that sin is your most precious possession, which is your own life (cf. Mark 8:36-37), because sin leads to death (James 1:13-15, Romans 6:23).

And what's being presented to your mind through your porn watching is a counterfeit. It's not really what your soul thirsts for. God did not create you for porn to be what you feed on. It's like eating fake food greedy people have made in their laboratories to sell and neglecting to eat natural food God has made for humans to feed on. And that feeding on porn counterfeit also has nothing to do with love, when God commands us and says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all  your mind and with all your strength, and your neighbor as yourself.”

Now I speak this to men in particular: How are you loving the woman on your screen who ended up on the set of porn movies, seeing she is lost? Would you watch your sister if she ended up on porn movie sets? When you find nothing wrong
enough with porn watching to turn you away from it for good, you are actually not far at all from that horrible thought. Because the more you reject agreeing with God about what's good and what's evil, the easier it becomes for you to call more evil things good and more good things evil, until you reach a point of possibly no return. God Himself lets you have more of the wickedness that you keep showing Him that you love (see Romans 1:18-32) and that, of course, will lead to your total ruin or perdition.

That woman on your screen is still someone's daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter... Let's consider again that you had to pay to watch her, and that she eventually got some of your money as her income, do you think she doesn't deserve better than that? Aren't the word to save her soul and prayers to have her eyes opened and be rescued from that life more important than your money? Can you love that person and be praying for her and at the same time be contributing to her staying in the bondage of the porn industry? See, you are both in bondage, not free in Christ. She needs to have her eyes opened, be brought from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God (Acts 26:18) and so do you. You need to get saved as much as she does! Because you haven't seen the salvation of Jesus Christ or you have despised it and regarded the pleasures of sin as more precious than fellowship with God in the light (1 John 1:5-7,  John 3:19-21). You are not following Jesus, the light of the world, so you are walking in darkness (John 8:12) on the broad way that leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13). You cannot call Jesus your Lord and Savior when you are being disobedient to Him and sinning (1 John 3:8):

Luke 6:46
Why do you call me ’Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?

Matthew 7:21

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

John 3:36

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

You cannot get saved as long as you don't think you need to. But the reality is that you do need to. You do not belong to Jesus Christ. Let it hit you. You are not led by his Spirit (Romans 8:9). You are led by your flesh that you have not crucified (Galatians 5:24). It's practical. "There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh but according the the Spirit" (Romans 8:1). That is not you. That can't be true of you until you do repent and receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38) and do walk according to the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, Romans 8:12-13). Then the Spirit of God in you also won't lead you to find satisfaction in porn. You will rather be led to pursue righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:17-24), and you will turn to Jesus to heal all the brokenness in you. You will be led to give to Jesus all your burdens, and not turn to porn or any other thing you want to live for because of whatever good you think you get out of it (based on a lie that you have believed). You need to first come clean with God and stop calling evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20). If you are calling porn "good" even if it's 1% of your heart that loves it, it still means you don't hate it 100% like God hates all sin, so you are "buying" that stuff without money to finance your own slavery to it; and you can't get delivered from it because you are not demonstrating to God with all your heart that you want to be delivered. God calls you to make up your mind. I am speaking the truth to you. I am not condemning you, I am telling you what’s keeping you under condemnation, as you are still being disobedient to God and under his wrath (John 3:36; Colossians 3:6), being still caught in the devil's death trap of sin (2 Timothy 2:26). And if you know that I don't speak for you and you know that you had been saved from bondage to sin, realize that you are now a slave of sin (again) and a slave doesn't remain in the house forever (John 8:34-36). You need to genuinely repent and be saved from that death trap of sin! Truth establishes reality. The truth sets you free from sin (John 8:31-32). Lies that you believe about you or about the goodness of porn for you (or others involved in it at any level) maintain you in your delusion and bondage to sin that leads to death (not to eternal life). You have idols in your heart and God cannot accept your worship until you repent and throw down with your own hands those idols that are in your heart. Take them and break them! Then your faith in God can be pure and you will be blessed of the blessing Jesus came to bring into the world (Acts 3:26). Come clean with God because He expects you to and because you are able to if you want to. Your only hindrance is loving your sin more than God. Face that truth and repent (do the right thing) or you will face God when you can't repent anymore (Revelation 22:11-12). This is an urgent plea!

James 4:8
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

May Jesus bless you!

ADDITIONAL EXHORTATION

Put forth whatever effort becomes clear to your mind that you must put forth to become a servant of God, because you are putting forth an effort into being a servant of sin, and through that, a servant of the devil. You have a choice to make about that right now. Don't wait on any answer to prayer that would cause you to be changed suddenly if you are not doing what God wants you to be doing (James 4:7-8). The process to get free starts with you agreeing 100% with God about what is good and what is evil and resolving to turn away from evil as He commands (Isaiah 5:20, Isaiah 55:6-7, James 1:21-22). You need God's word, which is truth, to be in you (Psalm 119:11). You can't fight the battle against sin, the flesh and the devil with human reasoning alone. You are likely then to only go on feeding your addiction with the lies you continue to believe. Eve sinned because she chose to believe a lie. There is nothing different today when anybody goes and sins deliberately, wether it's a one time thing or a habit. You sin, you die (Romans 6:23a, James 1:13-15). Don't believe a lie. That's God's word. Don't explain it away, don't let anyone explain it away for you. You are accountable to God for your choice to sin rather than to deny yourself, take up your cross to follow Jesus (Mark 8:34) [video].

What Would Jesus Do?

Is that just a cute saying? We certainly are called to do what Jesus did (e.g. honor his Father and obey Him in all in full submission to his will). So, we will one day be confronted with the fact that we may not have always cared to do what Jesus did or would have done when faced with the temptations we are faced with. And we know this about Jesus and facing temptations:

Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.
                                                                        _______

1 Peter 4:1
Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves with the same resolve, because anyone who has suffered in his body is done with sin.

Are you willing to suffer in your body so you can be done with sin? When you pluck out you
r right eye that causes you to sin or cut off your right hand that causes you to sin (Matthew 5:29-30), you suffer in your body. No need for a surgeon to do that. You do that when you deny yourself and take up your cross (an instrument of death) to follow Jesus (Mark 8:34). You die to yourself and that's how the new life in Christ can come, full of good fruit (cf. Romans 6:4-6, John 15:4-5).

Mark 8:35

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.

That verse co
mes right after the command for those who want to be Jesus' disciples to deny themselves and take up their cross to follow Him (Mark 8:34). You suffer because you choose to resist the devil and not fall prey to him when you are tempted by some forbidden fruit that is quite attractive (e.g. Genesis 3:6). And it's because you love the forbidden fruit. If you didn't love it, you would't suffer by just turning away from it. But if you obey God rather than your evil desire, your love for what is good, righteous and pure will grow. You will be transformed through your obedience to the truth, which is God's word, not the devil's word to you (lies certainly).

John 8:31-32
31 Jesus therefore said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free [from sin, see v. 36].

We can't be Christians and do away with those words. And that's the truth. Let's not realize that too late, because we have been conditioned to sum up the gospel as John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8-9. The message of the Bible will never fit in a tweet!

John 12:24-25
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. 25 He that loves his life shall lose it; and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it to eternal life.

If you are still attached to your life in this world and in particular to the sin that's in it, that's the strongest signal that you can send to God, after hearing the Gospel, that his gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23) does not interest you.

But when you give up on living in this world according to its principles, and you truly give your life to God, looking forward to eternal life, He knows you mean business and you shall enter in through the narrow door.

Luke 13:23-24
23 One said to him, “Lord, are they few who are saved?” He said to them, 24 “Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in, and will not be able.

Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it.14 How narrow is the gate, and difficult is the way that leads to life. Few are those who find it.

If this post disturbs you, we can discuss on the basis of the scriptures I have mentioned. Why shouldn't they be in your heart? Why wouldn't you love them and live by them?

Is Repentance Just a Change of Mind?

Repentance is a change of mind about both God and sin. And a change of mind by itself means nothing if action does not follow. If you are driving on a road going South and decide to go North for whatever reason, you have to actually stop and turn around or take an exit somewhere and re-enter the road in the opposite direction. So, in repentance, what we do is a turn toward God to be faithfully obedient to Him out of love going forward, and that's simultaneously a turn away from sin, which is disobedience to God.

As sad as it is, this is a teaching that many won’t receive as the apostle Paul prophesied that it would be in these last days (2 Timothy 4:3-4). If that’s you, please stop and think about what you just read.

Another example: You got ready to go see someone and the person calls you to tell you that he won’t be there, so you change your mind about going to see that person. Then you don’t still get in your car and drive to that person’s house. Do you? What you DO proves whether or not you have really changed your mind about going to see that person at the moment. Otherwise, it can be said that you have not changed your mind at all. Or it can also be said that you have not believed the person when he told you that he wouldn’t be home.

Apply that to God dealing with people now. God said, "The way of sin leads to death, repent!" Notice that God's message has two parts. The first part is an announcement or a revelation: "The way of sin leads to death." And the other part is a commandment: "repent! (if you want to live)" Now "just believing" the announcement and doing nothing won’t save a person. That's faith without works, which is dead (James 2:14-26). And "just changing one's mind" about not going on the way of sin anymore won’t save a person either, until that person actually fully surrenders to God's will and turns around and starts going the opposite way of sin/rebellion/disobedience to God. Then God will know that such person has believed his word and repented.

So, believing that repentance is "just a change of mind" out of the Greek word ‘metanoia’ and ignoring what the Bible plainly teaches about God calling people to repent, to return to Him, to forsake their evil ways and learn to do good, is believing in something else than what the Bible calls repentance! There are eternal consequences for rejecting God's truth in favor of a lie.

What do you do that proves you have changed your mind? What have you changed your mind about that you call your repentance? God cares (Acts 26:20; Matthew 3:8). You should, too.

Isaiah 1:16-20
16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. 19 If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; 20 But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword”; 0For the mouth of the Lord has spoken it0.

Isaiah 55:6-7
6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.

James 1:21-22
21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness [that's repentance], receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word [that's faith], and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

If repentance is just a change of mind, conversion (a change of course) is also implied.

Acts 26:19-20 KJV
19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Acts 26:19-20 NHEB
19 "Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the non-Jews, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

Acts 26:19-20 NIV
19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.

REPENT GENUINELY

You need to repent genuinely. That's the basis for the forgiveness of your past sins, that is, the sins you have committed up to the point of deciding to live a new life that is pleasing to God, no longer one where you seek to please yourself and your flesh and continue to sin (1 Peter 4:1-3). If you ever come to a point where you truly regret having sinned against God, then you will stop sinning against God. When you turn to God, you turn away from sin; that’s repentance and conversion (Acts 3:19). Turning to God that way is also the key to answered prayers (Isaiah 59:1-2, 1 Peter 3:12). And what you come into is a relationship with God that is like a marriage. You need to approach it like a person who gets married would completely turn away from past partners. Sin is supposed to remain in your past (like a past partner) once you come to God. The relationship with sin gets broken off in repentance. Read Romans 6:1-11. Sin is then not what you love anymore. You love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30), and you obey Him precisely because you love Him (John 14:15,  Galatians 5:6, 1 John 5:3). You don't give in to sin unless you have been double-minded about serving God faithfully from the start (see James 4:8). In other words, you were not actually prepared and ready for that "marriage," or to "give your life to God." So, go back to the square one of your repentance followed by faithful obedience to God (faith) out of love going forward (Acts 20:20-21, James 1:21-22). God's grace will empower you (Titus 2:11-14).

At the heart of genuine repentance is what the Bible calls "godly sorrow." Read what the Scriptures say about that and repentance and salvation in 2 Corinthians 7:10. You don't need a whole lot of knowledge about these topics. Just ask God to lead you to see sin as He sees sin, especially your own sins that you have committed against Him. You need to be sorry about your sin in the same measure that God is hurt/offended when you sin. Once your heart is broken and contrite about sin, then you will want to no longer be on the earth and be on the "wrong side" of Almighty God, completely despising the sense of his love to the point of sending his only Son to die so that you could have a shot at eternal life and not perish. You need to fear Him and that will be wisdom to you leading to salvation.

Psalm 51:17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit.

Proverbs 3:5-7
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Matthew 10:28
And fear not them who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

Out of Egypt and Out of Sin

Hebrews 11:29
By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.

We believe God has brought his people out of bondage in Egypt by opening the Red Sea for them to walk across it.

John 20:29
... Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

Now if anyone in Egypt did not think of himself as a slave, of what use would it be to hear Him who has made Himself known as the one who was able to bring his people from under the yoke of the Egyptians? They were certainly slaves who had been delivered (set free to serve God).

Exodus 8:1
Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says Yahweh, "Let my people go, that they may serve me.

So these people knew they were in bondage in Egypt. They had no doubt about that so they also understood what it would mean to be delivered (saved): they would no longer be serving the Egyptians and calling them their masters. But they would be serving Yahweh, the God of Israel and calling Him their Lord and Savior.

In the same manner, when Jesus came to bring salvation to his people and opening up to them the kingdom of God, it was out of a bondage situation as well.

Luke 1:68-75
68 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a horn of salvation (his Son Jesus) for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us— 72 to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham: 74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.

And the enemy was sin (not the Romans who were ruling over the Jews at the time of Jesus' ministry). It was not a secret what He would come into the world to do, as this was announced to Joseph:

Matthew 1:21
And she (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.

Here is an exchange between Jesus and some of those who heard Him on that truth of being a slave to sin but who rejected his words:

John 8:31-34
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

So someone who is in bondage and does not know it or denies the truth of it will not see what he needs to be saved from, and if there is talk of "salvation", it has to be something else than what God has offered through the sacrifice of his Son who died and was resurrected to give eternal life to those who would come to Him and be his disciples.

The conscience of sin is something that every person has. Just look at people shutting their ears when the word of God is spoken. Look at people being cautious not to offend their friends with what they know God has said. That is a light that someone has on the fact that he has a sin problem in his own life that needs to be addressed. But that light itself is not a force that will coerce anyone to go one way or the other. The choice to come to God must be made from a good and honest heart who receives his word and who will follow his ways in loving obedience.

Being a slave to sin then is being under the power of the devil and doing his will (following his ways and serving him – not serving God). So salvation is the means by which someone can be brought from under the power of Satan and so be set free (saved) to serve God. That was clearly communicated to Paul (Saul) when Jesus appeared to him to give him his mission, as he is reporting to king Agrippa:

Acts 26:13-18
13 At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and those who journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the pricks. 15 And I said, Who are you, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom you persecute. 16 But rise, and stand upon your feet: for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of these things which you have seen, and of those things in which I will appear to you; 17 Delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom now I send you, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me.

That purpose of preaching the gospel is what servants of God will endeavor to make known:

2 Timothy 2:24-26
24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

That is done by the power of God, not with one's own strength or by standing on academic qualifications with best intentions or not. God and his ways must be known, even by his own teaching and revelation of Himself (John 14:21; Hebrews 8:11-12; 1 John 2:27).

But false prophets will be busy with other agendas. Beware of false prophets!

See Acts 20:29; Matthew 7:15; Matthew 24:11; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15; 2 Timothy 3:13; 1 John 4:1; 2 Peter 2:1; Jude 1:4; Revelation 2:20.

There is no way Paul or Peter went about telling people that Jesus loved them and leading them to say a prayer to "accept the Lord" and be saved right then, and not letting them know that they were guilty before God because they were sinners, that they were in bondage to their sins and that there was a Good News of deliverance from that bondage of sin that brings sure death. There is no way. These apostles were faithful to the words of their Master Jesus that they had learned first-hand from, and they called people to repentance and faith (Acts 20:21).

Luke 24:46-47
46 And He (Jesus) said to them, "Thus it is written, for the Messiah to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance leading to forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Now people hear, "Your sins are forgiven at the cross" (even your "past, present and future sins") and never hear anything about repentance leading to forgiveness of sins and deliverance from sin. There is no personal responsibility laid upon anyone to come before God to get right with Him. No, it's "Just trust that you were made right with God 2000 years ago. Just believe that and you are good." These are lies.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

And the Holy Spirit will bring that conviction of sin, righteousness and judgement (John 16:8), which leads to repentance when the hearer receives the word with humility and has the fear or God, which is wisdom (Proverbes 9:10; Job 28:28). Consider the effect of Paul giving the gospel to governor Felix:

Acts 24:24-25
24 After several days, Felix returned with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 As Paul expounded on righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, “You may go for now. When I find the time, I will call for you.”

That is the truth at work. But God's word can fall on the side of the road (Luke 8:12), on rocky ground (Luke 8:13), among thorns (Luke 8:14) or in good ground (Luke 8:15). The truth will make its way as far as it can, that is, as much as someone will receive it (John 1:11-13). That is like light coming into a dark room as much as windows will be opened to let it come in. So repeating a "sinner's prayer" is not a magic formula to make every heart be a "good ground" that will receive the word with humility (James 1:21-22) while skipping repentance. The Holy Spirit does not minister to people through lies – only when the truth is spoken, whoever it may offend.

Matthew 11:6
And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

God resists the proud who will harden their hearts at hearing his word, but He gives grace to the humble, even the grace that brings salvation:

Titus 2:11-14
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

Jesus has the words of eternal life (John 6:68). Let's hear Him.

John 6:63
It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. (John 14:6)

Strive to enter in through the narrow door; for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in, and will not be able. (Luke 13:24)

Matthew 7:13-14
13 "Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it. 14 How narrow is the gate, and difficult is the way that leads to life. Few are those who find it.

Struggling with Lust? (Message for Men)

To lust after a woman means to desire that woman. That's the plain original meaning of the word "lust." It is a neutral word. But it has taken the connotation of having an "evil desire," especially of a sexual nature.

Sexual desire in itself is natural and not evil. That's even a basis for a man to pray for a wife. It is God's will that sexual relations should be between a man and a woman who are committed to each other as spouses. Otherwise, it is fornication/whoredom, or adultery more precisely if at least one of the persons is married. And these sins do begin in the heart (Mark 7:21-23). So, desiring something evil or forbidden is what constitutes sin, like desiring (to have) your neighbor's house, your neighbor's car, or your neighbor's wife (Matthew 5:28, cf. Exodus 20:17); entertaining thoughts of sexual activity (desiring that) with random people while seeing them as sex objects is evil as well.

But it’s not sinful for a man to desire the companionship of a woman to love her and commune with her sexually as his wife (1 Corinthians 7:4-5). It’s not sinful for a man to find a woman attractive in a physical sense either (Genesis 29:17). Also, any number of factors, natural or not, can cause a man to be sexually aroused.
He has not sinned by being sexually aroused, nor does being sexually aroused have to mean that sexual stimulation in some way that possibly leads to orgasm must follow. It's possible to reason and make a decision about the fact of being sexually aroused. But when a man's sexual desire is directed towards a woman that he is not permitted to have or any random woman that he may be enticed by, then that’s disorderly, and what follows that sin is death (James 1:13-15).

Many men are thus trapped in a cycle of sexual arousal and lust, without love in the picture, nor faithfulness towards any particular woman, and they follow the path of sin without resistance. That is their world and they are actually living in bondage to sin and need salvation from that (freedom from sin).

1 Corinthians 10:6
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

All that sinful lusting is coming from having an evil eye (Mark 7:22, Matthew 6:22-23). Jesus taught, "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell" (Matthew 5:29). The way to do that is obedience to the truth that purifies the heart (1 Peter 1:22, John 15:3). That means complete surrender to God and that happens in true repentance, when a person approaches God to have a relationship with Him. And when a man has committed his life to God, he also
has the understanding that he belongs wholly to God and he will not put evil things before his eyes (Psalm 101:3), nor dwell on stumbling blocks that appear in his environment to entice him to sin. He will take a firm stance against all that is not pleasing to God. God who sees clearly what the desire of his heart is will strengthen him by his grace to resist temptations to sin, if he has the willingness to go that way (away from sin) and really live for God.

James 4:8
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

God supplies by his grace all the power we need to live for Him (Titus 2:11-14, Romans 6:1-2, 12-15, 1 Peter 4:1-3, 2 Peter 1:2-11, James 4:6-10). His grace saves us from the power of sin and brings us to a new life (Romans 6:4; 2 Corinthians 5:17) where we can always exercise self-control, which is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Please see this post with information that will help you overcome (Revelation 2:7):
Freedom From Sin

Peace to you!
