You Cannot Be Unborn

This is a response to Charles Stanley's answer about whether a person who was once saved and who is then living a life of sin can lose his/her salvation [video: "AskDr.Stanley; Can I Be Saved? Then Backslide And Lose My Salvation? (5Min dvd.wmv)"; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5HhFqUFFxU ].1 He argues that a person cannot be unborn to make his point that a person who was saved cannot be lost again (no longer be saved).

Argument: you cannot be "unborn" (again)

Anyone who is alive can die. If being saved means being brought to spiritual life (Ephesians 2:1-7; John 5:24; 1 John 3:14), then those who have experienced the new birth, which is the first resurrection, can die if they go back to sinning (Hebrews 6:4-6, Hebrew 10:26). That's because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).

These were written to people who were born again so they knew the consequences of not walking in the Spirit:

Suffer The Cross To Overcome Addictions

When you do what Jesus says, you will have victory with Him:

Mark 8:34
When He had called the people to himself, with his disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

When you deny yourself and take up your cross to follow Jesus, you cannot at the same time follow after sin. So, you will refuse to give in to a temptation; you will suffer in your flesh. But if you are willing to deny your flesh and suffer with the help of God, you will see his deliverance. You have to count not sinning (offending God) as more precious than avoiding pain and diving into sin. That’s a self-sacrifice you would make out of love for God because you want to please Him and no longer serve/please yourself and your flesh and continue to sin (1 Peter 4:1-3, Romans 6:16).

The key to victory is true repentance. This is what fuels the addiction: constant surrender to temptations to sin (therefore surrender to the devil to do his will - 2 Timothy 2:26) rather than surrender to God to do his will. It’s an idol you have in your heart, something you value more than God. It's up to you to make a choice and act according to the choice you have made to serve God rather than to serve your “self” and go on sinning. And the results will follow according to God's promise: "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you..." (James 4:8).

Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been tested, he will receive a crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Luke 6:46-49
46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. 48 He is like someone building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. You have to show God that you are serious and that you trust Him to help you when you have made the decision to stop sinning no matter what comes your way. You need to have the faith to face the unknown with God when you stand your ground and refuse to give in to the temptation, even when it is very strong and you’re at your wit’s end. Focus on Jesus and expect his help. That’s how the rubber of your faith hits the road to freedom from your addiction. Believe that Jesus will come and rescue you, and by his grace He will give you power to be an overcomer and not be overcome.

Evil Desires and the Pride of Life

1 Corinthians 10:6

Sometimes, God may need to "reset" you so you don't go and destroy yourself. We are warned against the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:15-17) being opposed to having the love of the Father. If you walk in a way that these things can become snares to you and hinder your walk, God will prevent it if you belong to Him. He has many ways to slow you down as you go down a wrong path and one of them is that he will "zero" you out. By that I mean that he will humble you through some circumstances, He will bring you to something you will most definitely call "hitting rock bottom", so that you will remember that you should cling to Him and have Him first in your life and know that he is your "everything." Because the whole world is busy preaching something else to you to remove your focus from Him. That is the world we live in. It is a system that is essentially opposed to God and his ways. Satan is called "the god of this world" who blinds the minds of those who don't believe the Gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4). So, Jesus let his disciples know that they were aliens in this world because they no longer belonged to it or followed its values once they came to belong to Him, and the consequences followed:

John 15:18-19
18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Remark that the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life spoken of in 1 John 2:15-17 are the same things that made Eve sin:

Genesis 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (lust/desire of the flesh), and that it was pleasant to the eyes (lust/desire of the eyes), and a tree to be desired to make one wise* (pride of life), she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

*The devil had told her "your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:5) But He left out the part where God said that they will surely die! (And she forgot it, too! And Adam forgot it likewise!)

Genesis 2:16-17
16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.

So, don't think yourself more wise than the first man and woman, because the devil is busy preaching the same thing to all of us, albeit in very different ways than in the garden. But you will be blessed to take some time and look into your life and ask God to reveal to you if there is any area where you are driven by the desires of your flesh, the desires of your eyes and the pride of life.

The pride of life is a quite broad concept and it's tricky, too, because it has so many expressions, yet can remain hidden. It has to do with what you want to be or are proud to be or to do or to have (and keep) in this world. It has to do also with what you want to be known for; it sets you on a course to "gain the whole world" in your own way and lose your soul in the end (Mark 8:35-36). All things that drive you to find "treasures" in them rather then store treasures in heaven that will last forever are fueling the pride of life in you (Matthew 6:19-20). It's my life, my way, etc. It's not humility and submission to God that your life is founded on. But it's standing on a foundation that you have built and that won't stand (that's the bottom line). Because in all things you are not seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

If you were seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, then God would also fill you with what you actually need (Matthew 6:33). But instead, you go after the seemingly good deals of the devil for you in this world. So, your focus is on those things you think you need, and your hopes and dreams day in and day out are on them. You are short-sighted necessarily because your focus is on passing things. If your focus were on God, then eternity would be in your heart and you would devote all of your being to being on the way to it. You would walk on that difficult way to eternal life with God's graced working in your life (Matthew 7:13-14, Titus 2:11-14). So, things are out of order in your life just because God does not have first place in your heart. And what it takes is a strong resolve to fix that. Imagine parents working so many hours that their children are neglected. Can they work to fix that when they realize their mistakes? Yes, they can. And the solution may include painful sacrifices. The same goes for fixing things up with God. It only takes a firm commitment to pursue after God his way, no matter the cost!

Are the things you pursue self-centered or God-centered? Are you led to praise God or to praise yourself? Do you tend to draw attention to God and his kingdom or to yourself and your accomplishments? Seek to be sure of those things in your life one way or the other. Make corrections that are needed of strengthen your walk in the direction that's pleasing to God and you will be blessed. Keep your relationship with God pure. Remain unstained from the world (James 1:27). Being saved is also to have escaped the corruption that is in the world because of lust (evil desires) (2 Peter 1:4).

James 1:13-15
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So, the only way Satan gets someone to sin and to be bound in sin is through that person's own evil desires that he or she keeps acting upon, instead of keeping on living in submission to God moment by moment out of a humble heart (emptied of pride) that is ready to obey God out of love. Be careful. Pride is dangerous and pride is deadly. Pride breeds rebellion that got Satan thrown out of heaven where he was an angel at the service of God. So, no one can make it into heaven with rebellion that brings sin as evil desires get acted upon. But submission to God is required to enter heaven. We are called to pass from disobedience to obedience to God, and that's the key to passing from death in sin to the new life in Jesus Christ (Romans 6:4, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 2:1-9, Titus 3:3-7).

Romans 7:14-25 Bible Study

The teachings in Romans 6 are a foundation for the new converts the apostle Paul was writing to. He is giving instructions to these Roman believers in Romans 6.

However, in the Romans 7:14-25 passage, he is talking about his personal experience. And he did that to illustrate more clearly what he started talking about at the beginning of Romans 7, namely the believer's relationship with God's law. So, he started talking about the time of his relationship with the law, being married to it, not being dead to it and alive to Christ yet. Romans 7:14 tells us: I am of the flesh, sold into bondage to sin. That does not describe someone who has been saved. I will strengthen that point. But before going further, let's notice that it is already established that both Paul and the believers he is writing to have come into a relationship with Jesus, so they are saved:

Romans 7:4
Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

So, now let's visit Jesus' teaching about being in bondage to sin:
John 8:34-36
34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Being sold into bondage to sin is being a slave of sin needing a deliverance from sin to be then "set free" from sin by the Son, the deliverer, e.g. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness (Romans 6:18).

Let's re-enter the Romans 7:14-25 section and see that in the state Paul is describing that he is, he is both admitting to a struggle that is fully caused by his "body" – his flesh that is ruling (and ruining) his life, and he is looking forward to a deliverance, which he did find in Jesus:
Romans 7:23-25
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

So, up to the very end of Romans 7 he affirms that he is walking according to the flesh, the opposite of what comes in the very next verse (Romans 8:1, with the "therefore" that signals a conclusion). It's then definitely the new life in Christ Jesus spoken of in Romans 6:4, where he is no longer being led by the sinful passions of his flesh and thus no longer in bondage to sin:

Romans 8:1-2
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

The Romans 8:2 reality puts an end to the Romans 7:23 struggle. So, we have to go back now to Romans 6, the foundational teaching, to get how he became free in Christ and under no condemnation:

Romans 6:4-7
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life (cf. Romans 8:2). 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

So, that foundation having already been laid down, the apostle Paul was talking about a prior time when he made the present tense statement "I am of the flesh, sold into bondage to sin" (Romans 7:14). That foundation goes to the root of sin which is the sinful desires of the flesh that people indulge in. They are put to death in Christ, or when one comes to Christ through a real repentance according to what the Bible teaches. The old man gets crucified or put to death in that repentance. These are other scriptures that reflect what's happening or speak of what must happen in or through it:

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Galatians 5:24
And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. 25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Colossians 3:1-11
1 If then you were raised with Christ [unlike the Romans 7:14-25 person], seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died (cf. Romans 6:4), and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth*: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

*Such exhortations as the above are necessary, because a person only needs to feed his/her flesh that should have been put to death in Christ, for it to come back alive and it will surely rule him/her life and drag him/her right back to bondage to sin worse than before (e.g. 2 Peter 2:20-22), which is then no longer freedom in Christ. The devil is always seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). That is what "losing salvation" would mean if salvation itself is understood as being set free from sin and walking on the narrow/difficult road to eternal life (Matthew 7:14), and not being stuck in a Romans 7:14-25 experience. So, Jesus also taught that a slave does not remain in the house forever (John 8:35), which is reflected in his do or die messages to five backslidden churches in Revelation 2 and 3. He gave them notice to be zealous and repent (e.g. Revelation 3:19) and warned them of the severe consequences of not cleaning up their act.

It is thus settled for me that in the Romans 7:14-25 account, the apostle Paul was not yet led by the Spirit (Romans 8:1), which would be the case for a saved person. I see the same kind of present tense language being used in 1 Timothy 1:15, albeit in a more brief contrast between 1 Timothy 1:15 and 1 Timothy 1:16
15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.

The apostle Paul did not say to the Corinthians "Be followers of me, even as I also am [a follower] of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1), being a "pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life" (1 Timothy 1:16), as presently then a chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15) or a wretched man (Romans 7:24) still. Someone who is a new creation in Christ or born again could not be so described.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
